RJ Marine Marine Salvage and Towing
RJ Marine offers full Marine Towing and Salvage services. The United States Coast Guard now requires Masters who perform towing for hire to possess a Master of Towing License- and our Captains have theirs. This is an important consideration, not only for the USCG, but for insurance companies.
Recent Towing and Salvage jobs:
- During a gale force Southerly wind in October, a large houseboat broke free of it’s moorings in French Bay. The houseboat drifted unmanned and without lights across the Bay and into the shipping channel. Within 5 minutes of notification, the tug Abaco was dispatched from RJ Marine. Conditions were less then optimum, with extremely heavy rain and gale force Southerly winds. The house boat was captured and taken under tow moments before it would have grounded on Governor’s Island. The USCG and Seaway were kept fully advised during the operation. The houseboat was returned undamaged to her very relieved owners less then 1 hour after RJ Marine was notified.
- Tug Honey (65') and barge (110') aground on Lake Ontario , about 45 NM West of the RJ Marine yard. Vessel was hard aground on a rock shelf, holed, and was in danger of breaking up with probable oil spill. RJ Marine responded immediately upon being contacted. The M/V Carina and the M/V Maple Grove sailed at midnight with full crews and equipment, and had the tug and barge safely moored at the RJM yard within 22 hours. This was a tricky job as far as the government agencies, and required close cooperation with the US Coast Guard, Canadian Coast Guard, St Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, Optech Enviromental and others. The tug and barge were re-delivered to their owners at Clayton, to their complete satisfaction. RJ Marine was subsequently contracted to complete the tow to its final destination.
- Tug Salvor (110') and Barge (300') aground near Boldt Castle in the St Lawrence River . RJ Marine was contracted to provide assist tugs, oil boom, salvage pumps, anchors, manpower and other associated equipment. RJM crews responded immediately, and assisted in the transfer of cargo and the refloating operations. When the tug and barge were refloated, RJ Marine provided the tug escort to Prescott , Ontario and also assisted in the docking there.
